The project is about 472km long. Its construction started on December 12, 2014 and the planned construction period is 60 months. During the construction, the project shall create about 30,000 employment opportunities for local people of Kenya.

Mombasa-Nairobi SGR is the first section of Northern Corridor of East Africa Railway Network. It undertakes the task of freight transport among such countries as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo-Kinshasa and South Sudan. After its completion, the logistics cost of Kenya will reduce by nearly 40%. This project will provide infrastructure construction support for the completion of modern East African Railway Network and the East African integration process.
