President of Malawi Attends the Opening Ceremony of Karonga-Citipa Highway

Joyce Banda, President of Malawi, attended the opening and handover ceremony of Malawi-aided Karonga-Citipa Highway Project (hereinafter referred to as Malawi-aided K-C Highway) built by CRBC on January 7, and in his speech, she spoke highly of the significant role of this Highway in promoting the economic development of Malawi.

She stated the people and government of Malawi thanked the Chinese government for its help and support for the economic and social development of Malawi. Especially, this Highway connecting Citipa and Karonga, border towns of Malwi, will comprehensively improve the development of agriculture, tourism industry and mining industry of Malawi, and these three industries are important components of the five pillar industries in the national economic recovery plan of Malawi. Meanwhile, the President was also grateful to CRBC for it overcoming many challenges to complete the project on time.

In his speech, Chinese ambassador to Malawi Pan Hejun stated the completion of Malawi-aided K-C Highway would raise the bilateral relation between China and Malawi since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2007 to a new height.

Malawi-aided K-C Highway is a key Chinese Malawi-aided project, with a total length of 101km; and the areas it goes through are all hilly areas. After the completion of this project, the driving time from Karonga to Citipa will be reduced to 1 hour from 4 hours.

At present, this project has been handed over and entered the maintenance period.
