Date: 10/01/2021

On September 27, Engineering News-Record (ENR) announced the ENR 2021 Best Projects Awards, which enlisted two projects of CRBC. Karakoram Highway Phase II (Havelian –Thakot Section) Project won the Best Projects – Bridge/Tunnel, and Urban Road Upgrading Project in Kigali, Rwanda won the Best Projects – Road.

This is the third time that CRBC wins this international honor following the ENR Award of Excellence – Railway by Mombasa-Nairobi in 2018, the ENR Best Projects Awards – Road by Thies-Touba Toll Highway Project in Senegal and the ENR Award of Excellence – Bridge by Maputo•Katembe Bridge in Mozambique in 2019.

Karakoram Highway Phase II (Havelian –Thakot Section) Project

With a total length of about 118km, the Project involves a 39km long expressway section and 79km long secondary road section. With the bridges and tunnels measuring about 25km, it is the first project with the longest bridge and tunnel mileage in Pakistan, the core section of the land passage of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, and the key part of the South-North Road Network of Pakistan. The Project has positively facilitated the economic development of Pakistan, and the economic and trade cooperation between China and Pakistan. In the meantime, the Project also plays an important in enhancing the international trade between Pakistan and its neighboring countries and Middle Asian countries, maintaining Pakistan’s social stability and improving the investment atmosphere.

Urban Road Upgrading Project in Kigali, Rwanda

With a total length of 54.56km, the Project involves 9 municipal roads and was the largest road project under construction then, being a successful model for the practice of the Belt and Road Initiative in Middle Africa. The Project connects the municipal road network in Kigali, significantly improves the transport conditions and cuts the commuting time, hailed by local citizens as “a road making the city better.”

Hailed as the “Oscar” in the global engineering industry, ENR Best Projects Awards aims to select the most influential global projects across the globe and commend the outstanding design and construction teams. Being strict in selection, the award not only considers the construction quality, safety performance and innovation concept, but also places focus on the project’s social significance and core values. For the ninth session in the year, the projects selected are mainly those completed from January 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021.
