China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) commenced its businesses in Mauritania as early as in the beginning of 1970s. The Mauritania Nouakchott Friendship Port, the largest project aided and built by China in Mauritania, was organized and constructed by the Foreign Aid Office of the Ministry of Transport, the predecessor of CRBC. Its construction expanded for 15 years from the investigation in 1971 to the completion in 1986; and it was the largest project aided and built by the Chinese Government in Africa at that time after the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, known as the model of “South-South Cooperation” and “Symbol of National Independence of Mauritania”. Then, “Idini -Nouakchott Water Supply Double-Line Aided Project” was completed during 1987-1988, which basically solved the demand for water in Mauritania’s capital Nouakchott, and is also reputed as the “Source of Life”.
CRBC is also one of the earliest Chinese companies entering the contracting market of Mauritania. In 1988, CRBC formally established the Nouakchott Office in Mauritania, setting foot in construction markets in Mauritania. Since its establishment nearly 30 years ago, the Office has undertaken nearly 40 projects of all scales including highways, ports, airport runways, municipal construction, water conservancy, housing construction, farmland improvement and many other fields, playing a very important role in the development of Mauritania’s public infrastructure. According to the statistics, CRBC has contracted and constructed 700km highways and 7 berths so far.
