Chinese Relief Goods Are Transported to Disaster Area via Mombasa-Nairobi SGR

The great drought in Kenya has affected many local places, and more and more Kenyan people are suffering from hunger due to the grain shortage caused by continuously rising grain price. The Government of China decided to donate over 21,000 tons of rice to Kenya to alleviate the situation. To transport the grains to the disaster area more quickly, Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Operation Company decided to undertaken this tough task despite of the fact of unopened freight traffic, undelivered branch railway lines in port area, inactivated signal interlocking devices and insufficient freight locomotives in port station.

With the joint efforts from all employees, Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway Operation Company successfully transported the freight cars to the branch line in the port area for loading at 20:00 on June 18, and loaded 45 freight cars with 90 containers at 6:00 on June 19 despite of the many restrictions such as tight schedule, arduous task and great risks, etc. Then, this train, loaded with disaster-relief grains from kind-hearted Chinese people departed from the Reitz Port Station, and headed to Mombasa.
