Kenya's Nairobi Expressway Opens for Trial Operation

Date: 05/18/2022

On the morning of May 14, local time, the Nairobi Expressway in Kenya, invested, developed, constructed, and operated by CRBC, opened for trial operation. The Kenyan Minister of Transport James Macharia, Chief Inspector of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Paul Maringa, and Deputy General Manager of CRBC and General Manager of Kenya Office Li Changgui attended the event.

Macharia speaks to the media

Macharia and his delegation experienced the Nairobi Expressway by car, and communicated in detail about the work procedures such as ticket collection at the toll station, ETC service, and standardization of toll collectors. In an interview at the scene, he expressed that the Nairobi Expressway is one of the best infrastructures in Africa's history and a model project for cooperation between the government and foreign investment. The Expressway will reduce the travel time from the airport to the urban area from the previous two hours to 20 minutes, greatly improving the efficiency of urban logistics, significantly reducing the cost of logistics and public commuting, and promoting the economic development of the capital Nairobi and the entire country.

The construction of the Nairobi Expressway Project was started at a time when the COVID-19 epidemic was spreading in Kenya. The project department made advance planning, organized scientifically and made overall arrangements, paid close attention to epidemic prevention and control and key routes, and steadily promoted construction and production,  finally realizing the completion and operation of the Project as scheduled.

The Nairobi Expressway Project is the first highway PPP project in Kenya. It was developed by the Company in cooperation with the Kenyan government in the BOT model, with a total length of 27.1 kilometers. The construction was fully started in September 2020. The whole line passes through important areas such as the Central Business District of Kenya, the National Museum, the National Stadium, the Parliament Building, the Presidential Palace, and Kenyatta International Airport. The opening and operation of the Expressway will effectively alleviate the urban congestion, enhance the international image of Nairobi, create a large number of local employment opportunities, and further promote the social and economic development of Kenya, helping Kenya to become the economic center and cultural center of East Africa.
