RN1 is the national trunk line runningthrough North-South in Togo territory. In July 2008, a heaven rainfall occurred along this road, a medium bridge, 75 km away from Lomé was completely destroyed which led to a stagnation of north-south traffic. The Chinese government is very concerned about the situation in Togo, and decided to provide special financial aid to implement three bridges’ repair project.
As a general contractor for construction, CHINA ROAD AND BRIDGE CORPORATION (CRBC) undertook the survey and design work of the project. In accordance with the principle of effective design, functional application and quick construction, CRBC has designed three repair plans for the three bridges. It only took 12 days to get through the temporary bridge and pavement, to restore the north-south road traffic. The entire project implementation lasted 8 months, one month in advance than the schedule. During the construction process, the project team members and Togo staff overcame the high temperature, malaria, rainy season, equipment shortage and other difficulties and completed perfectly the bridge reconstruction and repair work; there was no case of security incidents.
During the implementation of the project, more than 200 technicians and machinery operators were recruited and trained locally.
